Gabriel Edward Martin:Portrayed by: Heath Ledger
Born in: South Carolina, USA; 1758-1780
Parents: Benjamin Martin & Elizabeth Putnam
Spouse: Anne Howard
Gabriel Martin truly is "The Patriot" of the film. With his peers joining the fighting against the British forces, he yearns to be a part of the cause for American freedom. After witnessing his father's ardent stance against fighting at the North Carolina Assembly, he is compelled even further to fight. Enlisting against his father's wishes, Gabriel joins his fellow soldiers and heads for the battlegrounds.
In the fray of fighting, Gabriel faces not only the elements, but the loss of friends. Spending the freezing winter at the infamous Valley Forge under George Washington's command, he finally returns to the South as an officer for Colonel Harry Burwell, who is a close friend of the Martin family.
Sent out to carry dispatches, he is badly injured and returns to the family home for aid. The next day, British forces arrive at the home lead under Colonel William Tavington. The dispatches are found, and Gabriel takes responsiblity: resulting in his arrest.
The first turning point in the film comes when Thomas, Gabriel's younger brother, is shot and killed when he tries to help him get away from the British soldiers. Gabriel's father, Benjamin, soon comes to his rescue by ambushing 20 soldiers and setting him free. After this, Benjamin takes up the role as leader of the state militia and Gabriel is his second-in-command. During this time, Gabriel embarks on courting a childhood friend, Anne Howard, allowing us to see the softer side of the young soldier.
Having only fought in well organized battles in the North, Gabriel is shocked and disgusted by the guerilla tactics and mentallity his father and other militia members use. He never does take on the tactics himself and encourages full aid and care to be given to surrendering enemy troops.
Upon returning to his family, Gabriel and Anne Howard are made man and wife. Just days later, tragedy strikes Anne's home town of Pembroke.
The town citizens are gathered in the church which is ordered to be burned by Colonel William Tavington, as punishment for aiding Bejamin Martin and the militia. The fire engulfs the church and eventually burns it to the ground.
The rage that builds up inside of Gabriel from the murder of his wife sends him hunting for revenge. Taking several militia soldiers with him, he hunts down Tavington and his troops in an ambush. After slaughtering all of the other soldiers, Gabriel attempts to repay the supposedly unconscious Tavington for what he did. Tavington, however, stabs Gabriel through the stomach, killing him minutes later.
His final words to his father are an apology for Thomas's death, and the realization he allowed his fury, like his father, to consume him. Gabriel died at the age of 22.
