Dear Mr. President,
My name isn’t very important, and neither is my craft. My skill-set is typically seen as being “outdated” for the Modern American Woman, and as such is outsourced to China, India, Thailand…
One hundred years ago, I might be average. Today, I am not. I am a young woman full of dreams, living alone and working hard to support myself (and my puppy) with my antiquated skill-set, after earning my Fine Arts degree last year:
I sew, I bake, I make jewelry, I design stationary. Because I like contrast–and because I am sometimes allergic to asking for help–I’ve taught myself how to build websites, do graphic design, photograph, bookkeep, launch marketing and ad campaigns… When I’m not doing these things, I’m working on film sets and photoshoots. Editing papers. Working as a cashier in a store. Learning how to shoot a gun, and how to properly ride a horse. Re-upholstering furniture….
I am terrible at sitting still, which only seems to be a positive quality in the pursuit of the American Dream. As I continue to pursue my dreams, I hope that you will accept this tie, hand-made by me. It is one of my new business’ most popular products, and I would be flattered if you would wear it.
I do not desire to be “great” or “important” in the ever-judging eyes of society. I could care less whether or not people know my name. I don’t need a huge house or a fancy car. I only want a simple life and the pleasure of good, old-fashioned hard work.
The American Dream is a proud one. It does not accept unemployment–it employs itself. It does not stop at “no” or listen to “impossible” — it proves the “you can’t” wrong. It does not sit back–it takes action. It may smolder, but it has not burned out and I believe that it never will.
I hope that you will wear my tie, and I hope that you will remember this about the American Dream.
